Taiyaki Beach Clean Up Day

Our Need

The need is simple. We wanted to help the environment. With the increase in young people taking simple measures to make a change, we thought we would join too. So, we decided to hold a clean up at our local beach.

Brainstorming

We did a brainstorming activity in class with something totally unrelated to our final idea. However, it actually helped us. We did another activity where we had to share with another group what our idea was. That’s when we decided to merge into a bigger group. Their group was selling mochi and our group was doing the beach clean up. Our ideas just worked together.

Our Process

Me along with three other members in our group met up on the weekend to create fliers and posters. We each designed a flier that advertised our beach clean up. I printed them out then we all passed them out and posted them around school. One struggle we had was whether we needed a permit to hold the event or to sell food. After emailing some people from Huntington Beach, we found out we actually did need the proper permits. We decided to just wing it and it worked out fine.

Our other part of the group tried making mochi. This plan failed, sadly. They decided to switch from making mochi to making taiyaki. Fortunately, their new plan worked!

The Big Day

Finally, it was the day of our beach clean up! We all showed up at our meeting spot and set up the table with taiyaki while my group started picking up trash on the beach. We ended up selling a lot of taiyaki, but not everything that was prepared.

The beach clean up part was kind of a fail because there was barely any trash at Huntington Beach. Around 5 people only gathered 1 bag of trash total. If we did this again, we would definitely choose another beach to clean up. Another problem was the lack of attention we received. Only a few of our friends showed up. Next time, we should advertise earlier in advance to better prepare for the event.
